Football Governance Bill Report Stage

I put an amendment to the vote in the Lords on the Football Governance Bill on the first day of Report Stage. It would have ensured that the incoming independent football regulator’s remit included considerations for environmental sustainability. This coincided with a vote on the launch of Green Football’s Great Save, the third annual Green Football campaign.

As a football fan, I’m well aware of the positive impact that clubs could have on their fans and wider society by leading on the issue of climate change.

My amendment to the Football Governance Bill was also signed by a Conservative peer and a bishop, and would have secured the long term sustainability of English football by asking clubs to assess their environmental impact when making decisions: anything from reducing plastic cups, which pollutes everything from our own lungs to the ecosystems of the high seas, to not taking advertisements from highly polluting companies.

My amendment would also have encouraged clubs to share good practice and make football and the fans aware of the changes and improvements, for them, and for our future.
