Baroness Jenny Jones was on the Met Police database for domestic extremists, while serving as an elected politician on the Metropolitan Police Authority, voting on their budget and holding them to account. The Observer story relates how “Government officials have drawn up deeply controversial proposals to broaden the definition of extremism to include anyone who “undermines” the country’s institutions and its values,”
Green Party peer, Jenny Jones said:
“Speaking as someone who spent several years on the Met Police’s list of domestic extremists, along with several thousand other people including Caroline Lucas MP, local councillors and journalists, I know draconian nonsense when I see it.
“This proposal is repressive legislation designed to be used by those in power to maintain power. Those cheerleaders of the right who think it is a good idea forget that it could be used against them at some point. There is plenty of evidence that this government is systematically corrupt and that has undermined the British values of democracy, transparency and accountability. I would argue that we should investigate and punish the corruption for the crime it is, not invent a catch all definition of it being un-British behaviour.”
“This Conservative government has spent much of its time undermining British values of decency, honesty and democracy. It is dangerously authoritarian and is damaging community cohesion for the sake of a culture war strategy it hopes will promote enough division to allow it to be elected again. The best way of lowering the levels of dissent in this country would be to hold a general election and elect a new government.”
