Michael Gove’s proposal for a full ivory trade ban was a welcome response to the calls for the protection of elephants. I signed a letter calling for the ban, along with around 200 NGOs, conservationists, MPs and others. It showed the strength of feeling behind the call for a ban and as a result, the Government looks set to take a tougher approach. I know that there is still the consultation process ahead and the antique trade will try to water down the ban and maximise the exemptions. I hope the government will not weaken in its resolve and that the ‘ban will prohibit the sale of ivory items of all ages’, as stated by DEFRA. Well done to Action for Elephants and all the other campaign groups across the world who are doing such good work to protect elephants and rhinos.
